Nine Quirky Ways to Personalise Your Wedding

Advice    10.11.2020

Your wedding day is the ideal occasion to dress up, have fun and eat what you like. From food and flowers to shoes and cake: you don’t have to stick with traditions. Here are just a few of our favourite cool and quirky ways to personalise your wedding.

Decorate Your Shoes

If a gal can’t wear the most fabulous shoes on her wedding day, when can she? Make your wedding shoes truly personal by wearing a pair that are unique to you. Or hand decorate your shoes with lace, flowers or crystals. Or perhaps have someone paint them with messages, images or symbols that are personal to you and your partner. And did we mention unicorns? Unicorns are good.

Carry a Non Floral Bouquet

Fresh flowers are lovely. But we’re seeing more and more brides opt for something a little less traditional and a bit more longer lasting when it comes to their wedding bouquets. If you still want something natural, choose dried flowers and sprigs of wheat, or perhaps a bouquet of fruit and berries. Bouquets made from materials such as lace, silk and brightly coloured felt are becoming increasingly popular. As are wedding bouquets made from paper flowers. Choose pretty pastel colours for your paper. Or for something really personal, have your paper flowers made from the pages of your favourite books. (Pick up secondhand copies at your local charity shop.)

Create Unusual Table Decorations

Your table decorations are the perfect opportunity to get creative and personal. And anything goes. Name each table after your favourite holiday destinations. Or famous people. Or the local Devon beaches. Or perhaps include photos of you and your partner as children. Wooden place names add a really personal touch. Or opt for table confetti such as rose petals, dried flowers, dried leaves or tiny wooden or paper hearts.

Serve Untraditional Wedding Food

When it comes to your wedding ‘breakfast’ opt for something altogether more relaxed and informal. Ask your caterer to put together a menu based on your favourite foods or even dishes from the countries you’ve travelled to.

Hog roasts and BBQs always go down well too. (Just remember to cater for the veggies.) Or serve little bowls of street food from a food truck. Good ol’ fish and chips is always popular. As are pizzas fresh out of a pizza oven. Yum.

Include Fun Signage

It's a good idea to use signs at your wedding to let your guests know where to go and what to do. But they don't have to be serious. Handwritten signs, personal messages or fun instructions always raise a smile and are a low-cost way to personalise your big day in a quirky way.

Enjoy a Non Cake Wedding Cake

Why not opt for a wedding cake that’s not really a cake? Not everyone loves a fruit cake covered in marzipan. We're seeing lots of weddings ditch the traditional cake altogether and choose one made from cheese (to be enjoyed with a glass or two of port). Or how about a tower made of brownies, macarons or cupcakes instead?

Have a Crazy Theme

Fiestas, Star Wars, Romeo and Juliet and Harry Potter and Gryffindoor: if there’s something you both absolutely love, why not make it the theme of your wedding? Have the groomsmen, bridesmaids, flowers and decorations in the colours of your theme. Or go the whole way and have all your guests dress up as well.

Use Funny Props

Nothing gets the party started like a silly hat, a pair of comedy glasses and a wig. Have a big table of props available and encourage all your guests to dress up and have their photograph taken. Include a glitter station too where the kids can get their faces painted with glitter. And by kids we mean everyone.

Invite Your Dog

Who doesn’t love a dog at a wedding? At Ash Barton, there’s plenty of space outside for your favourite furry family member, so why not invite them along to the big day? Having your pooch carry the rings is always cute. And you can even get a lead or harness to colour match the theme of your wedding. We can even accommodate your pet overnight, as we have a nice warm stable block which houses four kennels.
