Ash Barton Estate. Braunton. North Devon

Autumn Breaks, North Devon

Autumn is a beautiful time to take a break in North Devon, for both kids and adults. The days are still mild with a warm onshore breeze, the crowds die down a little, and the leaves on the Ash Barton estate turn a beautiful golden colour.

What to do in North Devon

At this time of the year, we recommend you head for the sea and the stunning coastal towns of Croyde and Ilfracombe. The beaches are quieter and there’s more time to explore the local villages, independent shops and markets. The waves are still up, so it’s a good time to surf. And you don’t even have to pull on your winter wet suit yet.

The last week of September is also a good time to catch the independent book festival in nearby Appledore. The annual event is one of the biggest cultural festivals in North Devon and attracts world class authors, speakers and artists. Or sample the area’s best food and drink at the North Devon Food Festival, which takes place in the town’s historic Pannier Market every October.

Autumn is also a great time of the year to take a hike. There are numerous walks to enjoy including the popular Tarka Trail with its stunning panoramic views. And who doesn’t love running through crunchy autumn leaves?

Enjoy more on Exmoor

If you decide to have an autumn break in North Devon, a visit to Exmoor is a must. The moorlands turn a rich burnt orange as the bracken and gorse change colour. You may even spot a baby boar playing in the woodland. The autumn light is particularly beautiful in this part of the world as the sky changes from blue to golden. Have your camera at the ready. Or take part in the Exmoor Dark Skies Festival from the end of October. There’s plenty to do including night trails, dusk safaris and moonlight swimming sessions.

Autumn at Ash Barton

Or you’d prefer to stay closer to home but still want to enjoy the fresh autumnal air, Ash Barton is surrounded by 25 acres of woodland, fields, gardens and wildflower meadows for you and your friends and family to explore.

After your outdoor adventures, come back to the house and gather round the fire pit on the patio to warm up. Or head to the games barn or indoor pool for some fun. Both are heated.

Autumn breaks in North Devon are alway memorable. If you’re thinking of taking a holiday at this time of the year, check out the Ash Barton Estate.

When you book a wedding venue without actually seeing it in real life you're really taking a leap of faith. But we couldn't be happier with our decision. The venue is truly phenomenal and for anyone wanting a DIY wedding venue, this really is the perfect venue.
