Paella, Bagpipes and a G&T Station: Nicola and Ali’s DIY Wedding

Interviews    01.09.2020

This time last year Nicola and Ali Maclgoine celebrated their DIY wedding at Ash Barton.

"Our wedding theme was a three-day festival wedding, and a chance to get all of our friends together for lots of dancing, drinking and great food," says Nicola. "Our DIY wedding was created with our friends and family who helped us achieve our dream wedding which was affordable, beautiful and so us! This teamed with the stunning Ash Barton Estate and our amazing suppliers, created a special occasion that we will never forget. Ash Barton will always hold a special place in our hearts!"

Hair: Devon Wedding Hair

"Hair was done by the amazing Kyrelle from 'Devon wedding hair'. With five bridesmaids, mother of the bride and myself to do, she did all our hair ahead of time and made sure we all looked and felt beautiful. I cannot recommend her enough!"

Dress: Pritchard and Moore

"My wedding dress was purchased from Pritchard and Moore in Cardiff. This store sells second hand and sample dresses to raise money for Cancer research. I was extremely lucky to fall in love with the first dress I tried on."

Catering: Latitudes Catering

"Latitudes catering provided a fantastic paella on our Spanish themed night, which was the night before the wedding. Served outside around the fire pit, it was a lovely way to kick start the celebrations. They also provided a fantastic brunch the morning of the wedding which was served in the courtyard. They were fantastic at catering to our needs and really helped us make the most of Ash Barton by using all the lovely settings."

Wedding Breakfast: Whiddon Valley Fryer

"Whiddon Waggon supplied our fish and chips which we had for our wedding breakfast. They were delicious, the guests loved them and it was perfect for our rustic wedding."

Glamping Tents: Pitch Tents

"They were amazing, they decorated the tents beautifully and all our guests loved them including our guests who don't like camping!"

Salsa Entertainment: Project Dance Devon

"For the night before the wedding we had a Spanish themed night with delicious paella and a salsa class taught by 'project dance Devon'. The salsa class was a huge hit. Taught in the gorgeous chapel with free-flowing sangria, our guests loved it and it was a great way for everyone to mingle before the big day."

Cake: M&S

"The three-tier wedding cake was purchased from M&S and decorated with fresh flowers by my creative Auntie!"

Ceilidh band: Oggle Band

"For the wedding band we had the wonderful Oggle band. A group of extremely talented musicians that got all of our guests on the dance floor including my Dad who hates dancing with a passion. So credit to them!"

Bar: Flybar

"We used Flybar as our bar. They were fantastic from start to finish.

"Drinks: One of my favourite parts of the wedding was the drinks reception. It included a G&T station in loving memory of my husband's mum, who knew how to party and make the biggest gin & tonics! This created a special place for the family to raise a glass to the beautiful Annie.

"And to finish it off we had a tequila station as this was the first drink Ali ever bought me after his cheeky line 'If you dance with a Scotsman you have to drink with a Scotsman'.

"We also had a local keg of ale from GT Ales in Barnstaple. We set up a station so guests could pour their own pints. Needless to say, there was none left!"

Flowers: "By my one and only Nan. It was so special to walk down the aisle holding a bouquet made by her. A wonderful memory."

Pre wedding yoga class: "Taught by my sister Rachael. This was a lovely chilled way to start the wedding day."

Photography: "By my wonderful cousin who captured so many beautiful moments. We cannot thank her enough."

Videography: "By our close friend David O'Brien who captured the whole three days of celebrations after flying from Canada! He made us a gorgeous wedding video, so we are truly thankful."

Music for the ceremony: "Bagpipes to walk down the aisle by Ali's cousin Ewan. He played Highland Cathedral so beautifully, we were both welling up as I walked down the aisle. A moment I will never forget."

"Our first dance song was written and performed by Ali's brother. A lovely surprise for our first dance together."

We loved having you. Happy anniversary Nicola and Ali!
