14 Wedding Trends Set to be Big in 2023

Advice    25.01.2023

When it comes to wedding trends, what's set to be big in 2023? And what are those favourite styles, colours and foods that are set to continue making their mark into this year?

Welcome parties

Just one day of celebrations? That’s so last decade. 2023 will see more and more couples choose long weekends to celebrate their nuptials. So if you’re getting married on a Saturday, that means you can have a big welcome party on the Thursday or Friday night as guests start to arrive. Garden games are a fun way to break the ice. Then follow this up with a BBQ, pizzas, a hog roast, and drinking round the fire pit or even a DJ to get the party started.

Outdoor weddings

Outdoor weddings became big news during the pandemic when there was a whole load of safety considerations to think about including social distancing.

Now we’re post pandemic, couples have continued to opt for outdoor ceremonies and the trend is set to continue in 2023. From wildflower meadows to lakeside vistas to pretty courtyards: an outdoor wedding is always lots of fun and ensures you have plenty of space for guests. Tip: Always have a back-up plan in case the heavens open.

Celebrant weddings

Couples who want a personal and unique ceremony are choosing a celebrant to officiate their wedding in 2023.

Unlike a registrar who has to deliver the ceremony in a very specific way, a celebrant has much more freedom when it comes to the service. As it stands, a celebrant is still unable to officially marry a couple (in England and Wales) so you’ll need a registry office type service somewhere else first. But a celebrant’s ability to actually marry a couple is currently under review and may happen soon than later. So chances are we’ll be seeing even more couples choose this option.

More colour

Pantone’s colour of 2023 is Viva Magenta, a bright, bold pink. So expect to see it make its way into weddings this year in all kinds of ways, from dresses to flowers and even drinks. Pink will also be teamed with other bold colours too like reds, yellows and oranges. So if you’re a lover of all things colour, this year is your year.

Cool groomswear

The last couple of years saw grooms opt for more colourful attire and this is set to continue in 2023. Coloured suits in light blues, greens, pinks and yellow in materials such as velvet are all the rage, as are patterned shirts and funky headwear.

Embroidered details

Ever since Hailey Bieber had an embroidered veil when she married Justin, the idea of personalising your wedding veil has been a growing trend. And that’s set to continue in 2023. But it’s not just veils. A special saying, an amusing quote or your married name can also be stitched on to your dress or on the inside of a jacket.

Mismatched bridesmaids

In recent years we’ve seen bridesmaids in different dress styles but the same colour, or the same style but different colours. 2023 will be the year that bridesmaids will be given much more freedom to wear more of what they want, from stripes and patterns to colours. Savvy brides will give their bridesmaids a colour guide and then let their bridesmaids run with it.

Statement floral displays

Smaller bouquets and poseys are on trend for 2023. But dramatic floral arches, table displays and hanging installations are set to be huge this year. Expect to see less greenery in bouquets and displays, with large colourful blooms such as hydrangeas instead. Plus, single types of flowers, such as white roses, but used en masse are expected to be big in 2023.

Cocktail hour

Expect to see the growing trend for speciality cocktails and mocktails continue this year. After the speeches and desserts but before the dancing gets going, serve specially made cocktails named after you and your partner, or your favourite destinations, films or books.

Late night fast food

2023 is all about partying until dawn. So you’re going to have to keep those guests topped up with carbs. A huge trend this year is late night fast food. Have your caterers serve up hot dogs or veggie dogs, or get a food truck outside cooking up fish and chips or burritos. Or get a local pizza parlour to deliver pizza for everyone around 10pm. Tip: Put this order in a few weeks before. Don’t leave it until the night.

Dramatic cakes

Pretty, naked cakes topped with fresh flowers and fruit are still very much in. But we’re going to be seeing a lot more over-the-top cakes in 2023. Think dramatic decorations like feathers and fake flowers, or personal details such as pets or hobbies, with neon signage and amusing toppers. When it comes to cakes this year, anything goes.

Grazing boards and charcuterie

These have become really popular in the last couple of years and that trend is set to continue in 2023. Huge platters of cold meats and local cheeses always go well. But it’s the huge dessert grazing boards that are really popular right now. Load them up with all kinds of sweet treats from macarons and marshmallows to brownies and fresh fruits.

Plant based food

Vegan wedding menus are also on the rise this year. So expect to see more plant based food served to guests this year. Some couple are opting for vegan options at every course. While others are going all out and having a completely vegan menu for everyone. Wedding caterers are fully on board with this trend. So expect some incredible vegan dishes served at weddings this year.

Outfit changes

As gorgeous as your dress is, chances are you’re going want to change out of it as soon as the party gets going. For 2023, brides (and grooms) are opting for spectacular outfits for the evening’s celebrations. Expect to see more sequins, more mini dresses, more jump suits and more dressing up.
