10 Real Weddings to Inspire Your DIY Weekend at Ash Barton Estate

Advice    30.09.2025

One of the things couples love most about Ash Barton is the freedom to make their wedding weekend completely their own. Whether you’re dreaming of vows under a centuries-old oak tree, a boho-style tipi in the meadow, or a candlelit ceremony in our old chapel, the estate is your blank canvas for creating something unforgettable.

Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to witness hundreds of beautiful celebrations, each one unique, each one reflecting the personalities and stories of the couple. Here are 10 real weddings that showcase the magic of a DIY weekend at Ash Barton, and the many ways our ceremony spaces can come to life.

1. Under the Old Oak Tree

For Lorna & Jake, nature was non-negotiable. They exchanged vows beneath the sweeping branches of our ancient oak tree, surrounded by meadow flowers and the gentle sound of birdsong. Guests sat on hay bales covered in vintage quilts.

Our centuries-old oak tree is a favourite for couples who love a natural, timeless backdrop. The dappled light filtering through the leaves makes for stunning photographs, while the open meadow around it offers plenty of space for seating, live musicians, or rustic décor like bunting and wildflowers. It’s an outdoor setting that works beautifully from spring through early autumn. Top Tip: You could always bring your favourite dog to trot down the aisle as your “best pup.”

2. The Tipi Celebration

Jane & Brendan wanted a relaxed, festival-style wedding, and our lower meadow was the perfect setting. With giant tipis strung with fairy lights, food trucks serving wood-fired pizza, and live music until the early hours, it felt like a private Glastonbury for their nearest and dearest.

The meadow gives you endless scope for a festival-inspired celebration. Think colourful flags fluttering in the breeze, rows of bell tents for guests, and space for everything from pop-up bars to fire pits. It’s easy to create a laid-back atmosphere where the party can keep going long after the sun sets.

 3. Rustic Romance in the Old Chapel

When Gen & Daniel stepped inside our 15th-century chapel, they knew they’d found the spot. With soft candlelight, trailing ivy, and the scent of fresh eucalyptus, the space was transformed into an intimate, atmospheric ceremony setting that felt timeless.

The chapel is a hidden gem on the estate with original stone walls, arched windows, and a naturally peaceful ambience. It’s ideal for smaller, more intimate gatherings, or for couples who want a sheltered space without losing that “country wedding” feel. Décor can be minimal, as the building itself is full of character.

 4. Garden Party on the Lawn

Claire & James chose our formal lawn for their afternoon ceremony, framed by the estate house as the backdrop. After the vows, guests sipped Pimm’s, played lawn games, and wandered through the gardens before a marquee dinner under the stars.

The manicured lawn in front of the main house makes for a picture-perfect outdoor ceremony. It’s a versatile space that works just as well for a traditional setup with white chairs as it does for a more relaxed, picnic-style celebration. Being so close to the house also makes logistics easy for caterers and guests.

 5. The Wildflower Meadow Aisle

Nina & Alistair said “I do” in the middle of the summer meadow, with its natural aisle of wildflowers in full bloom. They opted for a simple wooden arch draped with linen, letting the colours and textures of the meadow do the rest.

When the meadow is in bloom, it’s a stunning natural aisle all on its own. Perfect for couples who want a “less is more” look, it requires little additional décor beyond perhaps a small arch or statement floral arrangement. The surrounding countryside views add to the feeling of seclusion and romance. Not to mention, with an aisle going from the house to the altar in the middle of our wild flower meadow, we proudly have the longest aisle in the country!

 6. Courtyard “I Dos”

Some couples love the idea of being right in the heart of the estate like Amy & Sean, who hosted their ceremony in the courtyard. Guests gathered in a semi-circle surrounded by warm stone walls, creating an intimate atmosphere that flowed seamlessly into the reception.

The courtyard offers a charming, enclosed setting that works in all seasons. With its rustic stonework and easy access to indoor spaces, it’s particularly convenient for couples who want their ceremony, drinks, and photographs to happen in one central location.

7. Disco Room Meets Ceremony Space

Yes, it’s usually the dance floor, but for Jen & Tom, our famous disco room was also their wedding venue. They embraced the quirky vibe with neon lights, a celebrant-led ceremony, and a soundtrack of their favourite 80s anthems.

If you’re looking for something different, the disco room can be transformed into a bold and memorable ceremony space. The lighting, sound system, and quirky atmosphere are ideal for couples who want a non-traditional, personality-packed celebration.

8. Evening Vows by the Lake

Emily & Ben waited until golden hour for their lakeside ceremony. With the sun setting behind them and the water reflecting the glow, it was a peaceful, romantic way to start the evening’s celebrations.

The lakeside is a serene, romantic option for couples who love the water. With its natural beauty, it’s perfect for sunset ceremonies, relaxed elopements, or even morning vows followed by a lakeside brunch.

9. Cosy Winter Barn Wedding

Sophie & Matt chose the barn for their December ceremony. Guests gathered under the warm glow of fairy lights while the winter garden outside lay frosted and still. After the vows, everyone moved seamlessly into the house for mulled wine and a roaring fire with no need to brave the cold for long.

The barn is a fantastic winter ceremony option as it’s fully sheltered yet still filled with character. Backing onto the secret garden, it offers a beautiful backdrop for photos, even in the chillier months. Its close connection to the main house means guests can flow easily from “I do” to cosy celebrations indoors, without worrying about the weather.

10. Poolside “I Do”

For something totally unexpected, some of our couples have tied the knot beside the swimming pool on a golden summer afternoon. With the sun glinting off the water and a backdrop of lush greenery, it feels relaxed, radiant, and just a little bit glamorous. Guests sip spritzes poolside as the couple says their vows under a simple floral arch draped in linen.

The pool area is a brilliant choice for couples wanting a fresh, fun twist on the traditional ceremony. Framed by trees and totally open-air, it lends itself beautifully to barefoot elegance or laid-back summer chic. And when the formalities are done? It’s the perfect spot to kick off cocktails, canapés, or even a cheeky dip at golden hour.

Your Wedding, Your Weekend, Your Way

Ash Barton’s biggest gift to couples? Freedom. Jess & Alex chose a completely unique spot halfway up the slope in the meadow, with panoramic views of the Devon countryside. We’ll never forget the backdrop, or the fact that they toasted with homemade cider straight after the vows.

One of the best things about Ash Barton is that you’re not restricted to a set list of ceremony spots. If you see a place that feels right, whether it’s a tucked-away corner of the garden, the edge of the woods, or somewhere entirely unexpected, you can make it yours.

These weddings are just a glimpse of what’s possible at Ash Barton Estate. Whether you choose to marry under the open sky, in our historic chapel, or in a place no couple has picked before, your ceremony will be one-of-a-kind, and the rest of your weekend will be just as personal.
