Short Breaks on the North Devon Coast

A few days away over a long weekend, or even a short break in Devon during the week, is often all it takes to recharge your batteries and put you back on your feet.

And there’s plenty to do here in North Devon, from stunning coastal walks and days by the beach to boat rides round the bay and trips to Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks. And if your short break is really short, there’s plenty of space at Ash Barton to just kick back and relax and do absolutely nothing.

What to do on your Devon mini break

Short breaks in Devon are all about making the most of the fresh country air. So if you love the feeling of sand between your toes, head on down to one of the numerous nearby beaches. Saunton Sands has over three miles of golden sand. While nearby Croyde, with its thatched cottages, tea rooms and surf shops, also boasts a beautiful sandy beach, and is popular with swimmers, surfers and sun worshippers.

If taking a break and getting away from it all means pulling on a pair of boots and going for a long walk, North Devon is the ideal spot. The famous South West Coast Path has numerous easy access walks including from Morte Point to Bull Point, where you can enjoy the dramatic scenery with its rocky cliffs and sandy bays. Or why not hike or ride the ever-popular Tarka Trail with its unmissable panoramic views?

But if being on the water is your thing, take a boat trip to Lundy Island and look out for dolphins and porpoises. Or charter a boat and go fishing, snorkelling or diving.

And no trip to North Devon, however short, is complete without a visit to Exmoor or Dartmoor National Parks.

North Devon refreshments

If all this outdoor activity makes you thirsty, a trip to a favourite watering hole is recommended. The Poltimore Arms in Brayford, The Rock in Georgeham, The Grampus in Ilfracombe, The Red Barn in Woolacombe and Croyde’s famous The Thatch are all worth a look.

But if it’s something more traditional you’re after, a Devon cream tea is a must. Tea by the Taw in Barnstaple is one of our favourites. And the cream always goes on first.

Enjoy a short break at Ash Barton

Back at Ash Barton, you can meander through our wildflower meadow, eat warm scones in the kitchen, splash about in the heated pool for a bit, or laze around on the patio with the sun on your face. It’s completely up to you. It’s why Ash Barton is the perfect spot to enjoy a short break in North Devon.

This is our ninth year of family holidays and we all agreed that Ash Barton outshone all, including a chateaux in France! You've got an absolute gem here - beautifully situated and well maintained. Thanks so much. Games barn and pool are bonus features.
