Saunton Sands, only a five-minute drive away from Ash Barton, has a stunning sandy beach that stretches for three miles, and the longest tide in the country. Popular with surfers, swimmers, walkers and families there’s plenty to do here, whatever time of the year you’re visiting. If you fancy learning to surf, you can take lessons or hire surf kit. Or you may want to rent yourself a deckchair and soak up the sun. Don’t forget to slap on your sun cream. It’s available to buy in the local beach shops.

Nearby Croyde has some of the best surfing around and is a magnet for water sports enthusiasts. This lovely sandy beach, backed by sand dunes, is popular with more experienced surfers and rated one of the best surfing beaches in the world. It’s also the perfect place for a Devon beach holiday as there’s lots to do. As well as surfing, canoeing, boogie boarding and fishing, there are plenty of rock pools at either end of the beach that are fun to explore. And the olde worlde village of Croyde, with its thatched cottages and colour washed buildings, is just a short walk from the beach.    

One beach that always deserves a visit, is the award-winning Woolacombe beach, which is often voted Britain’s favourite. And no wonder. The three mile stretch, which sits between Morte Point and Baggy Point, is well-known for its clear blue waters and golden sand. There’s also a friendly laid-back vibe and some great eateries to enjoy too.

And at the western end of Woolacombe, you’ll find Putsborough Sands. It’s the perfect place to sit and eat fish and chips, and watch the sun go down.
